Beefsteak tomato (also called beef tomato in British English) is a large, meaty variety of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).
Key Characteristics
- Size and Shape: One of the largest cultivated tomato types, often 6–8+ inches (15–20 cm) in diameter, weighing 8 oz to over 2–4 lbs (225 g–1.8+ kg) each. They are typically globe-shaped or slightly flattened/ribbed.
- Texture and Flavor: Thick, dense, "meaty" flesh with few seeds in many varieties, juicy, and a classic balanced tomato taste (sweet-acidic). The name "beefsteak" comes from their hearty, steak-like solidity when sliced—no hard core, fully edible.
- Color: Most commonly vibrant red or pink; some heirloom types are orange, purple, or other hues (e.g., Cherokee Purple, Brandywine).
- Growth: Usually grown on indeterminate vines (continue producing throughout the season), though some determinate varieties exist. Popular with home gardeners but less common commercially due to size (less ideal for mechanical harvesting).
Common Uses
They excel as slicing tomatoes for sandwiches, burgers, BLTs, caprese salads, or topping steaks/grilled meats. Their size and texture hold up well when cut.
