A "hyloom" tomato (sometimes stylized as "hy-loom") is a hybrid tomato variety bred to combine the best traits of heirloom tomatoes with the advantages of modern hybrids.
Breakdown of the Term
- "Hy" from hybrid + "loom" from heirloom = a portmanteau term popularized by seed companies like Johnny's Selected Seeds, High Mowing Organic Seeds, and Bonnie Plants.
- These are F1 hybrids (first-generation crosses between two parent lines), so they are not open-pollinated like true heirlooms. Seeds saved from hylooms generally will not produce plants true to type.
Key Characteristics
- Heirloom-like qualities: Exceptional flavor, complex taste, unique colors (e.g., bi-color, striped), textures, and visual appeal — often modeled after classic heirlooms like Striped German.
- Hybrid advantages: Higher yields, better disease resistance (e.g., to leaf mold, fusarium, etc.), improved vigor, uniformity, crack resistance, and productivity — especially useful in greenhouse or field production.
Why They Exist
Growers and breeders created hylooms because many traditional heirlooms can be finicky — lower yields, disease-prone, or inconsistent. Hylooms deliver "heirloom eating experience" with more reliable performance for commercial or serious home growers.
Example: Gin Fizz (GinFiz) is a well-known hyloom — it has the striking bi-color look and sweet flavor reminiscent of heirlooms but with hybrid-level disease resistance and output.
In short, hylooms are the "best of both worlds" for many tomato enthusiasts.
