Melon Piel de Sapo (Organic)

Piel de Sapo (Spanish for “toad skin”), also sold as Santa Claus melon or Christmas melon. It’s a winter-type muskmelon (*Cucumis melo*, Inodorus group) that originated in Spain.

Appearance:  It’s oblong or football-shaped, typically 8–12 inches long and 3–8 pounds (some run larger). The rind is thick, waxy, and un-netted, with a mottled dark-green and yellow-green pattern that looks like toad or frog skin—hence the name. As it ripens the background often picks up more yellow. The flesh is pale green to creamy white (sometimes with a faint yellow tint near the seed cavity), firm and juicy.

Flavor:  Mild, clean, and honeydew-like: sweet but usually less perfume-heavy than a cantaloupe or Galia. Texture is crisper and firmer than honeydew, with a refreshing, slightly tropical or pear-like note when it’s a good one. Quality varies; Spanish-grown fruit is often the benchmark.

How to pick and store:  The thick rind doesn’t give off much aroma, so go by:
- a yellowing blush on the skin
- slight give at the blossom end
- weight for size

It keeps exceptionally well—weeks at cool room temperature, sometimes into winter—which is why English-speaking markets call it Santa Claus or Christmas melon. Once cut, refrigerate.

Uses:  Eat chilled on its own, in fruit salads, with cured ham or prosciutto, in gazpacho, or with citrus and a pinch of salt. It’s a standard dessert melon in Spain (especially La Mancha and Murcia) and is also grown in Brazil, Costa Rica, and parts of the U.S. for export. Maturity is typically 90–110 days.
